”Those who I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent.” -Revelation 3:19
God chastises and disciplines us out of His love for us. If there were no divine correction in my life I would doubt His love for me. Correction + Discipline = Love. God loved us enough to save us from eternal death and He loves us too much to leave us the way He found us. He is constantly molding, shaping, and correcting us when necessary. He is our Heavenly Father who loves us and cares how we turn out. What an amazing honor and blessing!
As a loving parent, I discipline my children. I do so BECAUSE I love them. I want my children to become successful, well-balanced adults. By successful, I don’t mean rich and famous. I mean possessing the tools to be all that God has called them to be. If I see one of them straying down the wrong path, I bring correction. When they don’t heed my correction, I bring punishment. The goal of punishment is to give them something to help them remember that this particular choice is going to have painful results. I would much rather have them experience painful consequences while they’re still at home under my care, than out in the world. Any parent who says they love their children too much to discipline them, doesn’t really understand love. From my experience (over 30-years worth), children respond well to discipline because they want to know that you care about what they’re doing. They want the security that comes with structure and knowing the boundaries.
Although we want to know that He loves us, discipline is not the most fun way of finding that out. The next time you feel the discipline of God on your life, rejoice that He loves you and know that you are being steered in the right direction. Yield yourself to His discipline and know His amazing love, then repent . . . with all the zeal you can muster so that you can walk in His blessings.
