”but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.” -Exodus 20:5-6
The “thousands” in this verse is referring to the generations of those who love the Lord. I think for context sake we should read the previous verse, Exodus 20:5 – “You shall not worship them or serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,”
Notice the vast difference in the numbers here. He could just as easily have CURSED thousands of generations, instead of three or four, as well as BLESSING thousands. I find that interesting, and I see from this that even in His justice, God is merciful. I also see that God is extremely generous to those who love Him and keep His commandments. The two go hand-in-hand. Love and obedience. “The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him’, and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;” -1John 2:4. To know Jesus is to love Him, and to love Him is to respect and obey Him. If you have children, do you feel loved and respected when they disobey you?
Even when we disobey our Heavenly Father and don’t show Him the love and respect He deserves, as a faithful parent He never stops loving us. He loves us to thousands of generations after us, when we repent and return to obeying Him in love. His commandments are for our food, to guide and protect us. It’s only pride and a hard heart that keeps us from seeing that. What’s the condition of your heart today?
