”The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” -1 John 4:8
I have always found this verse to be very convicting. It really makes me stop and consider how I love. Do I only love those who are easy to love, like my children and my husband? Do I only love people I really like, or do I love as God does? God is no respecter of persons when it comes to His love. He loves us all. He may not love our lifestyle or the way we behave sometimes, but He loves us – His creation.
God loves the smelly, homeless person on the street corner just as much as he loves the Spirit-filled pastor who wants to minister to them. God does not discriminate. Can we say the same? If I know God and claim to love Him, then I need to love everyone the way God does. I say “the way God does” because the way man loves is not always healthy. We tend to either love someone based on what they can do for us, or on how much they need us to do for them. Our love is not as pure and unconditional as God’s. With His Spirit indwelling us and helping us, however, we can come close.
Sometimes the only thing we can do for someone (and the best thing) is to pray for them. Other times, the Spirit will lead us to give of our time and energy. I believe that loving as God does also means to be Spirit led. Allow God to permeate your heart, listen to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, and love as He leads. You can never go wrong with that.
When you know God, you know His voice, and you know who He wants you to demonstrate His love to and how He wants you to do it. Knowing God is key. How well we know our God will determine how well we love.
